About Us

University Hill Elementary School, administered by the Vancouver School Board, is nestled in the natural beauty of the University Endowment Lands at the University of British Columbia. University Hill Elementary is a vibrant and diverse community of learners. With its international reputation, UBC attracts students, post-doctoral fellows, visiting scholars and permanent faculty from all over the world. As a result, University Hill Elementary enjoys a breadth of cultural diversity that brings with it tremendous opportunities for educational enrichment and the integration and sharing of cultures.

University Hill has an Outdoor Natural Science Education and Technology focus. Due its location, University Hill provides ongoing opportunities for outdoor education and maintains established learning partnerships with UBC departments and faculty. The school gardens, orchard, current and expanded outdoor classrooms, the GVRD Pacific Spirit Park, partnership with the UBC Botanical Gardens and Beaty Biodiversity Museum offer our students a variety of opportunities to experience their world. Coupled with SMARTboards in classrooms, mobile technology including iPads, laptops and Apple TV, enrichment using chess, robotics and the natural sciences make University Hill Elementary a world class school.

In addition, the school has a hot lunch program, on-site daycare and many clubs for enrichment, service and interest both afterschool and during the school day. For registration information, please use the Registration tab on the top navigation bar or contact the school office at 604-713-5350. We accept registration for Kindergarten through Grade 5 and welcome cross boundary applications.

Our story

The school was originally opened in 1927 as a Kindergarten to Grade 12 school, administered by an independent school board. In 1954, University Hill Secondary School was built and the building was converted to an elementary (Kindergarten to Grade 7) school.

In 1997, the current building opened. Since that time, the University Hill community has gone through some changes and grown. University Hill Elementary has been operating at over capacity for the past decade or so until 2014. In January 2013, the secondary school moved to the former National Research Council Building on 16th and Wesbrook and the old site of University Hill Secondary is being converted to become Norma Rose Point Elementary, an elementary (K to 5) and middle (6 -8) school. Norma Rose Point is scheduled to open in the Fall of 2014 and will serve some of the student population currently attending University Hill Elementary. At that time, University Hill Elementary School will become a Kindergarten to Grade 5 school.
