Tyee Welcomes our new Principal
Dear Tyee Community,
I am so excited about being the newly appointed principal at Tyee! It is wonderful to be invited to be part of such a unique and dynamic learning community where the Montessori program is followed and the Montessori philosophy is honoured. In the few days I have been here I can already see what an amazing school Tyee is – parents, staff and students have welcomed me – and it is already clear that it is a tight-knit, supportive and passionate community which takes care of each other.
This is such an exciting time in education in British Columbia. The New Curriculum gives teachers permission to teach the way they know students learn best: through individualized and personalized learning, project based learning and teaching and learning from passions. More than ever students are regarded as partners in their own education, and teachers are given a broader scope in choosing how to deliver curriculum. Does this sound familiar? It might, because so many of the elements of the New
Curriculum align with the tenets of the Montessori philosophy, where project based learning and student choice have always been an integral part of the program.
The Big Ideas, which frame each subject area for every grade, are a bit like Maria Montessori’s Great Stories: a starting place for diving into each subject. The Core Competencies include many essential skills which have always been important in every program, but especially in Montessori: Creative and Critical Thinking, Communication through traditional and technological literacies, and Personal and Social awareness as individuals and as members of the community. Finally, just as in the Montessori program, the New Curriculum emphases the importance of strong Literacy and Numeracy programs.
Who am I and what do I bring to Tyee? I have taught in places as diverse as Spain and Nigeria and have been an ELL, Resource and Core French teacher, as well as a Grade 1 teacher in schools across Vancouver. Literacy is one of my passions, especially writing, which was the focus of my Masters, with my YA Novel, Inside the Wind, and my major paper: Flashlight Writers: Boys who Write. I am also deeply interested in all of the arts: visual, dramatic and music. I taught at Maple Grove, a Montessori & Traditional School, and was Vice Principal there for one year, so I have a good understanding of the philosophy. Most of all I am passionate about education and about the possibilities – the yet, the future selves, and the nurturing of the generation who will create their own jobs and define the future for themselves and for us. I look forward to working with everyone at Tyee to be part of that journey.
