Salmon in the Classroom

salmon-0191.jpgIn B.C., the Grade 4 science curriculum focuses on learning about animals and their habitats, life cycles and adaptations.
The Grade 4s at Tillicum have the privilege of learning up close about the life of a Salmon.  In January, we receive Salmon eggs from the Ministry of Fisheries, which we care for and hatch in our own classroom Salmon aquarium. For 2 months we care for the eggs and learn about the needs and habitat of local Salmon species. After the eggs have hatched and matured for a few weeks, the class releases the developing Salmon back to the river to allow them to carry on the rest of their life cycle. This program is a hands on learning experience for our students but it also shows the students how they can play a part in protecting and preserving a local species along with its habitat.
