Code of Conduct
 
 
At Southlands School, we have developed a Code of Conduct based on respect, responsibility, and safety, in order to create an environment that promotes positive academic, social, and emotional development.  It is each student’s responsibility to follow the Code of Conduct and school rules at school, while going to and from school, and while attending school curricular and extra-curricular activities at any location.  We want students to learn to take responsibility for their behaviour.  As well, we want students to learn that appropriate behaviour has positive consequences and that inappropriate behaviour has negative consequences.  School staff work in partnership with families to ensure that a fair and consistent approach to student discipline is maintained.

Students’ Rights and Responsibilities
 
Students have the right to:
·         be safe.
·         be treated with respect and kindness
·         learn in a supportive environment
 
 
Students have the responsibility to:
·       follow the Southlands Code of Conduct
·       follow the school and classroom rules.
·        act safely
·        treat others with respect and kindness
·        always try their best
·          come to school on time, prepared to learn
Experience has demonstrated that certain specific rules, mainly to do with safety, are also required to guide students’ behaviour.  These rules are:
 
·        Students are expected to walk in the hallways, and to not raise their voices.
·        Dangerous and rough play is not allowed.
·        Students must stay on the school grounds during school hours unless permission is granted by the office.  Written permission is required from a parent.
·        Everyone is expected to keep the school grounds clean and safe.
·        Chewing gum is not permitted in the school building.
·        Bicycles, rollerblades, skateboards, baseballs, and scooters must not be used on school property.
·        Wooden hockey sticks and laser pointers are not to be brought to school.
·        Students must not bring toy weapons, guns or knives to school.
·        The school will treat seriously behaviour or communication that discriminates based on race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex or sexual orientation (prohibited grounds set out in the BC Human Rights Code).
 
Misbehaviour
 
Types of Misbehaviour
Misbehaviour is generally regarded on a three point scale of severity.  Below is a list of examples, to indicate how misbehaviors’ may be categorized.  This list is not all-inclusive, but can serve as a guide.
 
Level 1
·    classroom disruption
·    teasing
·    running in the hall
·    swearing
·    behaving in an unsafe manner
Level 2
·   multiple level 1
·   pushing or kicking
·   fighting
·   cheating
·   non-compliance
·   theft
·   discrimination
Level 3
· multiple level 2
· possession of a weapon
· possession of illegal substances
· threats and intimidation
· vandalism
· defiance
 
Consequences of Misbehaviour
At Southlands, positive behaviour is recognized.  As well, students regularly participate in activities designed to enhance their awareness of the Code of Conduct Motto and the desirable behaviour it suggests.  Student behaviour is always considered in the context in which it occurs.  The child’s age, the seriousness of the behaviour, the frequency of the behaviour, and the specific circumstances are all considered when a child engages in inappropriate behaviour.  These are the general guidelines used when determining consequences for misbehaviour:
 
Level 1
·        handled by staff member
·        incident may be documented *
·        parent may be contacted
·        consequences will include one or more of the following: warning, behaviour sheet, restriction, community service
Level 2
·        principal may be involved
·        incident will be documented *
·        parent will be contacted
·        consequences will include one or more of the following: restitution, in-school suspension, as well as Level 1 consequences
Level 3
·        principal will be involved
·        student will be removed from the situation
·        incident will be documented *
·        parent will be contacted immediately
·        parents of other children may be contacted, to reassure them that appropriate action has been taken
·        an outside authority may be involved, as may school district officials
·        consequences will include one or more of the following: suspension, behaviour contract, referral, legal action, as well as Level 1 and 2 consequences
 
*Documentation involves recording the incident in a computer database, which allows the school to track behaviours and plan and implement strategies designed to improve student behaviour and increase socially responsible behaviour.  A record of the incident may be placed in the student’s file.
