2018-2019 Kindergarten Registration - What do Parents Need to Know

Do you have a child born in 2013?
Kindergarten registration starts on Nov. 1st, 2017
Kindergarten registration gets going district wide between November 1st, 2017 and January 31st 2018 for children who will begin school the following September. The Vancouver School Board is proud to offer excellent instruction at all of our schools including a wide range of educational options for all different types of learners.
We encourage families to get to know more about your catchment school and what they have to offer your child. All Kindergarten applicants are required to submit an application to their English catchment elementary school.  This includes families who wish to apply for choice programs and/or a cross boundary placement.
So how do I register?
The first step is to register at your English catchment school - regardless of whether you plan to send your child there.  ALL CHILDREN MUST FIRST REGISTER AT THEIR ENGLISH CATCHMENT SCHOOL.
You can discover where your English catchment school is by going to
When registering your child please bring:
1.     Proof of residence in Vancouver
2.     Child’s birth certificate
3.     Immigration documentation (if applicable)
4.     Immunization records
The priority registration period for Kindergarten opens on Wednesday November 1st and closes at 4 pm on Wednesday January 31st.  Students who submit an application within this priority period will be accommodated prior to late applicants.
If your child was born outside of Canada, you need to go to the VSB District Reception and Placement Centre (DRPC) and complete the initial Kindergarten application there.
If you are planning to attend your English catchment school, you’re all done. Now you just need to get your child excited about Kindergarten.
What if I want to apply for a choice program?
The district offers a variety of choice programs including French Immersion, Mandarin Immersion, Fine Arts, Aboriginal Focus School, International Baccalaureate and Montessori. Parents must register at their neighbourhood English catchment school before applying for Choice Programs.  The on-line application process for Choice Kindergarten programs runs from early January 2018 to early February 2018.  The link will go live at that time so check in regularly.
There will be a district supervised draw to select applicants for the available program space.
Offers for program spaces will be made by late February/early March. You will be given a formal offer of a space in a Kindergarten choice program or an indication of where you sit on the waitlist. If you have not heard back by early March, please contact the school Principal of your neighborhood English catchment school and they will help you find out about your child’s status.
What if I want to apply for an English school in another catchment area?
If you are interested in having your child attend an English school that is not your catchment school you will need to submit a cross-boundary application. The cross-boundary process opens February 1st 2018 (no sooner).  The deadline for cross-boundary application is February 28th, 2018. If you are applying to a school outside your catchment area, it is important for you to know that your child will only be considered once all in-catchment students have been placed.
Where can I get more information or help if I run into any difficulties?
If you have any questions or need additional information about this process, you can visit If you have any troubles with the registration process or the online choice program application process, contact your English catchment school. They will be happy to walk you through the process.
