Given ongoing discussions at the provincial level regarding restored teacher collective agreement language and its implementation, the district has determined it is necessary to delay placement offers for ALL elementary and secondary district choice programs.  This includes English French Immersion at Queen Elizabeth Annex and Jules Quesnel.

The revised date for first placement offers for all district choice programs has been changed to Wednesday March 1, 2017.

2017-18 Kindergarten Registration - What Parents Need to Know

Do you have a child born in 2012?

Kindergarten registration starts November 2nd

Kindergarten registration gets going district wide between November 2nd, 2016 and February 1st, 2017 for children who will begin school the following September. The Vancouver School Board is proud to offer excellent instruction at all of our schools including a wide range of educational options for all different types of learners.

We encourage families to get to know more about your catchment school and what they have to offer your child. All Kindergarten applicants are required to submit an application to their English catchment elementary school.  This includes families who wish to apply for choice programs and/or a cross boundary placement.

So how do I register?

The first step is to register at your English catchment school - regardless of whether you plan to send your child there.  ALL CHILDREN MUST FIRST REGISTER AT THEIR ENGLISH CATCHMENT SCHOOL.

You can discover where your English catchment school is by going to http://www.vsb.bc.ca/school-locator.

When registering your child please bring:

1.      Proof of residence in Vancouver

2.      Child’s birth certificate

3.      Immigration documentation (if applicable)

4.      Immunization records

The priority registration period for Kindergarten opens on Wednesday, November 2nd and closes at 4 pm on Wednesday, February 1st, 2017.  Students who submit an application within this priority period will be accommodated prior to late applicants.

If your child was born outside of Canada, you need to go to the VSB District Reception and Placement Centre (DRPC) and complete the initial Kindergarten application there.

If you are planning to attend your English catchment school, you’re all done. Now you just need to get your child excited about Kindergarten.

What if I want to apply for a choice program?

The district offers a variety of choice programs including French Immersion, Mandarin Immersion, Fine Arts, Aboriginal Focus School, International Baccalaureate and Montessori. Parents must register at their neighbourhood English catchment school before applying for Choice Programs.  The on-line application period for Choice Kindergarten programs begins January 11, 2016 and ends February 6, 2017 at 4PM. http://kchoice.vsb.bc.ca

There will be a district supervised draw to select applicants for the available program space.

Offers for program spaces will be made by late February.(*See update above) You will be given a formal offer of a space in a Kindergarten choice program or an indication of where you sit on the waitlist. You will have 48 hours to accept or turn down the offer.

Please note that as Jules Quesnel (JQ) and Queen Elizabeth Annex (QEA) share the same catchment area, acceptance at your preferred location is not guaranteed.

If you decline the spot at either location (QEA or JQ), your child is removed from the master waitlist and is no longer eligible for Early Immersion at neither QEA nor JQ.

If you have not heard back by late February, please contact the school Principal of your neighborhood English catchment school and they will help you find out about your child’s status.

What if I want to apply for an English school in another catchment area?

If you are interested in having your child attend an English school that is not your catchment school, then you should apply through the cross-boundary application process. Applications will be accepted at the requested school beginning February 2017. The cross-boundary application deadline is February 28, 2017. Cross-boundary applications will only be considered once all catchment students have been accommodated.

Where can I get more information or help if I run into any difficulties?

If you have any questions or need additional information about this process, you can visithttp://www.vsb.bc.ca/kindergarten. If you have any troubles with the registration process or the online choice program application process, contact your English catchment school. They will be happy to walk you through the process.
