Transitional Social Studies

Prerequisite: placement test given either by the VSB or by the ESL Department at Point Grey indicating that the student’s ability is that of a student in the upper intermediate grades (i.e. Grade 6 and 7) or successful completion of ESL 2 Social Studies.

Transitional Social Studies courses use texts from the regular Social Studies programs; however, the pace is usually slower and there is more emphasis on vocabulary and basic English skills than there would be in a regular class. Emphasis is given to understanding how events in history have influenced our lives today. When there are sufficient numbers, this course is divided into junior and senior. The mark obtained in this course determines the placement level of the student in ‘regular’ social studies in the following year.
