Camp Ignite Mentorship Program 2016 – August 11 to August 14, 2016 - Female students between the ages of 16-18 will be given an introduction to the exciting and challenging career of being a firefighter. Girls will be introduced to firefighting skills as well as participate in team building activities. Along with this they will receive a CPR level A certificate and Fire Extinguisher training. Vancouver Fire & Rescue – Youth Outreach Academy – April 11-15, 2016 Students in Grades 10 to 12 are invited to apply for this five day program. This free action packed Academy teaches 24 young people to work together in small teams and in challenging environments by providing training and mentorship. Some program content: use of fire apparatus and fire extinguishers, search and rescue techniques, self contained breathing apparatus, using the “jaws of life”, fundraising for a local charity, and more! Journey Into The Trades Event – For Grade 10 Students and Parents - Wed., January 27, 2016 (8:45am to 11:15am) at Magee Secondary (Pro-D Day.) The goal of Journey Into The Trades is to create awareness around trades and apprenticeships as a first choice career option. Former VSB ACE IT and SSA students will share their stories of where their journeys have taken them. Employers and organizations will feature booths at this event to showcase a variety of trades. Interested students are to see Mrs. Quan in the Business Education Department for registration packages and consent forms. Please get your packages before the winter break as they must be completed and sent to VSB Career Programs by January 08, 2016.

Mineral Exploration Roundup 2016 - An international exploration conference hosted by the Association for Mineral
Exploration BC (AME BC) will be held at the Vancouver Convention Centre East under the sails at Canada Place from
January 25-28, 2016. Roundup brings together individuals and companies representing the broader mineral resources
industry – from prospectors to environmental services consultants. Since 2004, MineralsEd has worked with AME
BC to invite secondary students to Roundup for an opportunity to learn more about the minerals industry and the
wide variety of great careers available.
Soaring: Indigenous Youth Career Conferences - Indspire invites high school educators and their First Nation, Inuit, and Métis students to attend Indspire’s Soaring: Indigenous Youth Career Conferences in Vancouver, BC on either Thursday, February 11, 2016 or Friday, February 12, 2016. At Soaring, students may explore post-secondary options through campus tours, engage in career workshops and an interactive tradeshow with industry professionals, and learn about Indspire’s bursaries and scholarships. The Westin Bayshore, Vancouver Community College, and the University of British Columbia will each host a Soaring event that will include a complimentary lunch and prize giveaways. Invitation to Students & Parents/Guardians: Find Your Fit Career Exploration Event (www.findyourfittour.ca) Churchill Secondary's small gym will soon be transformed into an amazing array of interactive stations for students and parents/guardians to explore. It is an opportunity to learn about the most in-demand jobs in BC, investigate training options, and connect with free WorkBC information and services. It is targeted to Grades 6 and up. An “open to all” public session will be held on Mon, Dec 7th from 3:30pm to 7pm. This is a free event that is sure to be engaging and informative. The address is 7055 Heather St. (near Oak & 54th).

All students must spend a week at VCC (Monday to Friday from 1pm to 7:15 pm.) In order to be with the current ACE IT class, the best weeks are: November 30-Dec-3, or December 7-10, or January 4–7, or January 11-14. Students should select a first and second choice.
You will need to complete any paperwork (field trip form, teacher release from class, non-standard work ed.) Please be aware of associated fees - the VSB only pays the tuition fee. Students are responsible for the rest. Info session on April 7th is mandatory, parents should also attend. The competition for the program is fierce and VCC makes the final decisions. The student’s week at VCC plays a critical role in the acceptance. Students will not receive acceptance notifications until May. All students who apply will be interviewed by someone from Career Programs. While applications are due now, interviews will not be until later – closer, but prior to the VCC interviews. Students must have Foodsafe prior to the program beginning – www.foodsafe.ca - certificates must accompany VCC applications in the spring. Students should have their Foodsafe by spring break at the latest.

This all day program will include presentations by young professionals working in a variety of careers within the industry, a career-focused exploration of the exhibits, and hands-on gold panning with Yukon Dan.
