Sir William Macdonald Elementary was renamed Xpey’ Elementary on October 23, 2017, in recognition of its status as Vancouver School Board’s District Indigenous Focus School. Xpey’ means “cedar” in the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ language of the Musqueam people. We welcome Indigenous and Non-Indigenous students within our school.

Proposed realignment of Macdonald Elementary catchment area
(Oct 6 update)

In 2011, with the creation of the District Aboriginal Focus School, Macdonald Elementary stopped admitting new kindergarten students for the regular catchment. There are only a few remaining students in the regular program and they are now in grades 6 and 7.

As a result, VSB is looking to realign the regular catchment area, which outlines where children register for their local school. The district held a drop-in open house at Macdonald Elementary on October 5 to share details of the realigned catchment areas.

Anyone who was unable to attend the open house can  view the presentation boards that set out the proposed catchment realignments and provide their input via a  feedback form. The form can either be printed, completed and scanned to vsbengage@vsb.bc.ca or returned to the Macdonald Elementary school office by Tuesday, October 10, 2017.

The proposed change would not affect the District Aboriginal Focus School program, which will continue to run out of Macdonald Elementary. Students entering the District Aboriginal Focus School come from across Vancouver and its catchment covers the whole district. VSB is committed to the District Aboriginal Focus School program and there is a process underway to select a new name for the school that reflects its role in Indigenous education.
