CSL 8 / 9 Project (2018-2019)

Communicating Student Learning (CSL) Grade 8/9 Project 2018-2019

Background

The current CSL pilot involves 60 elementary schools and 2 secondary schools.  This pilot will continue to expand in both elementary and secondary schools next year.  A CSL 8/9 working group has been established comprised of representatives including administrators, district staff, and secondary teachers.  The working group informs the Education Change Committee as well as any updates to Committee III--Education and Student Services.

Intent of the District CSL 8/9 Project

The intent of the CSL pilot is to support the creation of a revised District Student Reporting policy which will be written and approved by the Board in the 2019/20 school year.  The policy will be informed by the CSL pilot K-9. The goal is to have all schools aligned with the policy in the 2019/20 school year.

Aspects for CSL 8/9 Pilot School Participation

There are three aspects that have been established by the working group for school participation which include:

  1. Cumulative Reporting by Grade
  2. Continuous Self-Assessment throughout the year in multiple subject areas
  3. Alignment of Learning Activities with learning standards

Schools can participate by choosing one, two or all three of the above aspects depending on your school context and readiness.  Ideally schools would commit to participating with an entire grade (ie. grade 8) next year and then look to expand to grade 9 in 2019/20.

School Team Composition

  • One administrator
  • District Resource Teacher: Curriculum & Assessment (subject to final approval by the Board at the end of May in our budget process)
  • 2-4 teachers (multi-discipline)
  • Participate in three after school meetings (4-5:30 pm) at Hamber Secondary Learning Commons

Meeting Dates:

    • June 7, 2018
    • October 11, 2018
    • February 12, 2019
