Kitsilano Secondary Seismic Renewal Project

In October 2011, the Province announced that Kitsilano Secondary School will be renewed through a $57.8 million restoration project. See the Ministry of Education News Release [PDF - 295 kb]. The renewed Kitsilano Secondary School is expected to be completed in 2016.

This announcement represented the culmination of many years of discussion and collaboration by stakeholders in the Kitsilano Secondary Seismic Renewal process: Kits PAC, Kitsilano Secondary staff and students, the Vancouver School Board, and the surrounding Kitsilano community.

Kits PAC Seismic Renewal History

Kits PAC has been very committed to the Kitsilano Secondary Seismic Renewal Project since discussions began in 2007. Following is a brief history of key events in the Kitsilano Secondary Seismic Renewal process leading to the announcement of funding in October 2011.
 
October 28, 2011 -
Announcement by Premier Christy Clark
The Province announced Kitsilano Secondary School will be seismically renewed based on the Kitsilano Secondary Renewal Concept D2 with a budget of $57.8 million.
July 5, 2010 -
VSB Board Meeting
The Vancouver School Board confirmed Kitsilano Secondary Renewal Concept D2 as the preferred development option for the seismic renewal of Kitsilano Secondary School. A request for funding for the seismic renewal of Kitsilano Secondary School was submitted by the VSB to the provincial government.
June 22, 2010 -
VSB Committee II (Planning and Facilities) Meeting
Committee II heard comments from stakeholders such as teachers, students, parents, community groups and concerned citizens, including representatives from Kits PAC. A motion was passed to recommend Kitsilano Secondary Renewal Concept D2 to the Board as the preferred development option.

As a result of the feedback from the Open House, CitySpaces Consulting prepared a Renewal Plan Status Report
March 3, 2010 -
Open House
An Open House arranged by the VSB through CitySpaces Consulting was held to present the six design concepts to the Kitsilano school and neighborhood community. An estimated 225 people visited.
December 8, 2009 –
Kits Seismic Renewal Committee Meeting
Six design concepts for the renewal of Kitsilano Secondary were presented to Kits PAC by CitySpaces Consulting.
October 14, 2009 -
Kits PAC Meeting
Kits PAC welcomed Vancouver School Board Chair and liaison trustee for Kitsilano Secondary Patti Bacchus to outline the proposed Project Charter for the second phase of Kitsilano's school renewal. Two parent representatives were elected to represent Kits PAC on the Kitsilano School Planning Team (KSPT) project advisory committee. The KSPT also consisted of the school Principal Chris Atkinson, two teachers, two students, one support staff representative, and one member of the VSB Planning Steering Committee. The first meeting of the KSPT was October 29, 2009.
April 7, 2009 -
VSB Committee II (Planning and Facilities) Meeting
Representatives from Kits PAC as well as Kitsilano Secondary teacher representatives and a student representative presented information to Committee II including a summary of results from the Kitsilano Secondary Seismic Renewal Open House and Visioning event, the results of the Kits PAC Survey, and the Kits PAC Seismic Renewal Vision Document.
March 2, 2009 -
Meeting with the Premier
Three representatives from Kits PAC met with Premier Gordon Campbell at his office to make him aware of the Kits PAC Seismic Renewal Vision Document.
February 26, 2009 –
PAC Meeting
Based on feedback from the Kitsilano Secondary Seismic Renewal Open House and Visioning event and discussion amongst members, Kits PAC developed a Seismic Renewal Vision Document.
February 13 and 14, 2009 –
Kitsilano Secondary Seismic Renewal Open House and Visioning event
A Kitsilano Secondary Seismic Renewal Open House and Visioning event took place at Kitsilano Secondary from 7 to 9 pm on Friday, February 13, and from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm on Saturday, February 14. The event, which was jointly arranged by KitsPAC and CitySpaces Consulting, the firm contracted by the VSB to steer the Kitsilano Secondary School seismic renewal process, featured speakers and hands-on activities to allow the Kitsilano school and neighbourhood community to dialogue about the design for a renewed Kitsilano Secondary School.

Kits PAC Seismic Survey
Kits PAC collected parent and community input about the seismic renewal of Kitsilano Secondary School through an online survey.
December 8, 2008 –
Meeting with the Premier
The Kits PAC Seismic Renewal Committee was visited by Premier Gordon Campbell. Key points to be considered in the seismic renewal of Kitsilano Secondary School decided on at the December 2, 2008 PAC Meeting were presented.
School year 2007-2008 Kits PAC received information about a plan to seismically upgrade Kitsilano Secondary School. The Kits PAC Seismic Renewal Committee (Seismic Mitigation Committee) was formed to begin discussing and planning Kits PAC involvement in the process.
