Programs and Services


The Grandview Community Garden project has improved the quality of life for children in our neighbourhood. It also functions as a living laboratory and a model of an urban ecological school yard. This is a multi-generational place for children and people of all ages in the community to learn to live more sustainably in the urban environment. Ultimately, our mission is to create a healthier, positive neighbourhood environment to improve the community as a whole.

One acre school grounds were planned and planted by students ages 3 to 13 with their teachers, parents and adult mentors. Tracy Penner, BLA, designed the site based on the ideas and wishes of the children, teachers, parents and neighbours. It features native plants and sustainable water use with swales and a dissipation pond to keep rain on site, out of sewers. 

The Longhouse with totem poles carved by our elder Ramona Gus and painted by all the students are used as a community gathering site and outdoor classroom.  Students climb the Mound and roll down to the dissipation pond  where they make dams and rivers when it rains. Students painted the 'River of Life' and 'Mosaic Gateway' murals (Spring 2002) that adorn our school walls and grounds.

The Longhouse Outdoor Classroom:  a community gathering place for outdoor learning and celebration.  Design inspired by the Musqueam traditional longhouse.

The Student Garden:  corn, potatoes, broccoli, kale, watermelon, strawberries to name a few foods grown by the students.

The Community Organic Food Garden:
families work together for the health and self-satisfaction of growing organic foods.

The Ethno-Botanical Garden: cultural and environmental restoration.  Students will learn the native names and uses of local indigenous plants.

The Natural Habitat for birds, butterflies, hummingbirds and other insects: home for diverse wildlife. These are red flowering currant blossoms that provide the first nectar of spring to the returning hummingbirds.

The School Garden Boxes: life sciences, applied mathematics, language arts, fine arts, multiculturalism, good health gained by eating the home-grown produce and through the exercise of gardening; self-sufficiency and increased self-confidence
Environmental Restoration and Natural Drainage: shaping one's environment to invite wildlife back into thet city and understanding natural functions of the envrionment

Salish Patio and Drinking Fountain: a public art project created by youths and managed by local artists; water as the source of life in a place of beauty
The Bosque: maple tree species from across Canada; observe and learn about diversity

Literature about Grandview/¿uuquinak'uuh:
A case study of the school appears in Evergreen's National Case Study Book on school gardens, Grounds for Learning Grandview, cited in Great Britain's Policy Book on 'Schools of the Future' as an example of school grounds planned by students to serve student and community needs.

Oxford University press published Our Communities, a grade 3 social studies text. The chapter on the environment features 4 pages on the children creating Grandview's gardens with color photos and the statement, "The students and teachers at Grandview/?uuqinak'uuh Elementary School and other adults worked together to make the world a better place." (p. 148)
