Earth School Concept

Earth School Concept

Students are engaging in experiential learning to build their connection with the Earth.  School-wide, year-long earth themes - Water, Earth, Sky, Forest - will allow students to understand the complexity of the Earth and their place within the environment.  Students engage in stewardship of the land through regular work in the school garden.  Student community service helps develop social responsibility and a greater sense of connection to others.  Integrating the prescribed learning outcomes with Earth learning gives students opportunities to investigate relationships linking individuals, societies and natural surroundings.

We are in our first year of the Earth School Concept focusing on the theme - Water.

Our goal is to provide an environment for children and families to actively engage with the Earth and each other to become self-reliant individualswho understand their responsibilities as global citizens.

Through public consultation, we are looking at the following projects:

1.  Revitalization of the Ethno-Botanical Garden

2.  Addition of Fruit Trees and continued addition of growing space
3.  Developing a Natural Play-Area
An exciting opportunity for funding ($100,000+) for a natural playground has been presented to Grandview/¿uuqinak'uuh.  This comes at an ideal time as it contributes to the further development of the Earth School concept.  Bienenstock Natural Playgrounds is a leading natural playground design-build company that has completed many successful projects across Canada and beyond.  Possibility of funds from ING Direct to help support the development is currently being investigated.  The idea is that students, teachers, community members and VSB staff would be involved in the consultation and design of the space  and many opportunities would be given to ensure that the development of the space was acceptable to all stakeholders.

Composting
Grandview/¿uuqinak'uuh has an on-site composting program.  The Earth Tub is designed for  composting of food-wastes.  It is a fully enclosed composting vessel featuring power mixing, compost aeration and biofiltration of all process air.  Heat generated in the tub rapidly breaks down food scraps.  The volume reduction is 70% or higher.
