Parent Advisory Councils (PACs) are the official voices for parents at the school level, both elementary and secondary.
As a parent or guardian of a child(ren) attending Charles Dickens (Main or Annex), you are automatically a member of the Charles Dickens PAC. Yes, all parents are members of PAC!
Each year, in June, elections are held at an open meeting to elect your PAC Executive members. These are a subset of PAC parents who are elected by you to meet regularly with the school administration for continued communication and pursue special projects and fundraising for all students and classes.
Some of the projects for your Dickens PAC Executive include: our annual Spring Fling fundraising event; Holiday Hampers for families in need in December; monthly speakers/information sessions for parents; meet and greet opportunities for parents and families etc. Most of these initiatives rely heavily on support and help from the larger parent community. So even if you aren't on the PAC Executive, there are many more opportunities in which you can help out - a little or a lot - throughout the year.
Some of the activities sponsored by PAC Exec fundraising efforts during the last year included: more laptops or e-readers for classes; World Dance Project Bollywood for the whole school; Project Chef and Healthy Eating for some classes; various Student Council initiatives; Red Ceder Book Club; Chess Club; author visits for the whole school; artists in the classroom for some classes; TV Club for Gr 7s; field trips for different classes, and in classroom literature resources.
At the school-district level, parents/guardians also have a voice in the system through District Parent Advisory Councils (DPAC), and through the BC Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils (BCCPAC) at the provincial level. The Vancouver DPAC is a collection of parents working with the common goal of supporting education for all the children of Vancouver who's main purpose is to support the PACs at the school level and to encourage them to share their parents' views at the district and provincial levels; to represent the views of city parents to the Vancouver Board of Education through participation on school board standing and advisory committees; and to advocate for Vancouver parent concerns at the provincial level through representation to the BCCPAC, Vancouver Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), and the Ministry of Education (MOE).
The BCCPAC represents the membership of all PACs and the DPACs of BC school districts. Your Charles Dickens PAC is a member of both DPAC and BCCPAC.
