Parent Volunteer Appreciation TeaTeachers and staff would like to show their appreciation for parent volunteers at a Volunteer Tea on Wednesday, June 14th from 2 – 4 pm in the JQ Staffroom.  Many school programs would not be possible without your help.  If you are able to join us, please RSVP to Liz in the office at:  etoone@vsb.bc.ca.  We look forward to seeing you.

Choir ConcertThank you to Choir Director, Colleen Cotton, pianist Dr. Elinor Chambers and all JQ choir members for a memorable performance yesterday evening.  You set the bar very high and having the grand piano available put the icing on the cake!  Well done to everyone.

Tennis and Water PoloA reminder that students in Divisions 8 to 17 will have 4 to 5 tennis sessions during the week of June 12th to 16th (on Byng tennis courts if fine weather and in the gym if raining). Students in Divisions 1 to 7 will be participating in two water-polo sessions during the same week. Thank you to PAC for its part sponsorship of tennis and water-polo.  Please ensure that your child has appropriate outdoor shoes for tennis and that they bring their bathing suits, goggles and towels for water polo.  Copies of the schedules are attached.

Track & Field Wrap-Up:  Please see the attached Track & Field Wrap-up including photos from Lori Durward.  Thank you to everyone for their participation and sportsmanship and once again a huge thank you to Lori and parent volunteers for making this season possible and running early morning practices so often in the rain.

LibraryWe are still missing many books and would be grateful if you could have an extra hunt around at home for any outstanding JQ library books.  Library fine notices will be sent home next week with students.

Annie MusicalIt’s finally show time!  After many months of rehearsal, the two casts of Annie are looking forward to being on stage on Thursday, June 15th and Friday, June 16th.  Tickets for these two amazing performances are now on sale most mornings, just outside the Computer Lab.  Adults: $15, Children: $10.

Next year’s Musical will be Beauty and the Beast.  More information on signing-up for auditions and getting involved will be posted soon.

Nature Club: The last meeting of the 2016-17 season took place today.   Students released lady bugs by the raised garden bed and took home a plant.  A huge thank you to Doris Anderson and Nature Club parent volunteers for running this program.
If you are interested in leading Nature Club next year, please let Doris know at doris@dorart.com.

Also if anyone is able to water the garden over the summer, please let the school know.

Sports Day and Summer Carnival – Save the Date – Friday, June 23rd
Plans are well under way for the end of year Sports Day on the morning of Friday, June 23rd.   Students will be divided up into primary or intermediate teams and will rotate through a number of stations led by teachers.  Parent volunteers are welcome.  Primary students will finish by 11:15 am and intermediate students by 11:45 am.  Students all need to bring their own snack and lunch just like a regular school day.   (Please note that it will be the last pizza day of the year).

In the afternoon, the PAC are organizing a Carnival d’été from 2:00 to 6:00 pm.   The theme will be retro in honor of Canada's last 150 years!  Some great games are planned, the famous dunk tank will be there and we are going on a flavour bender with Samosa's and more! More details to follow but you'll want to save the date!

While some teachers may take their students to the Carnival between 2:00 and 3:00 pm, please note that parents must be responsible for supervision of their own children at the Carnival after the school bell at 3:00 pm.

Student Placement/Class OrganizationA reminder that the deadline is next Friday, June 16th for all notes to be considered. Please share your thoughts in writing to Mme. Morissette at nmorissett@vsb.bc.ca or drop off a note with the office.  All information will be shared with teachers.

Correction to last week’s bulletin – Run for the Kids – JQ Team
Last week’s bulletin had an error/omission.  Kathryn Hepburn headed up the JQ Team in this year’s team in the Run for the Kids last Sunday.  Connie ran the RBC Run for a number of years, but this year, Kathryn organized the JQ Team.

“Thanks to all the JQ Families that participated in the 2017 Run for the Kids, on June 4th along with more than 5900 participants – helping to raise $1 million for childhood cancer and mental health research and treatment at BC Children’s Hospital.”

JQ PAC NEWSPlease see the attached information for the latest PAC News on the Technology Fund and important dates to note:  PAC End of Year Meeting - Tuesday, June 20th; Staff Appreciation Lunch - Thursday, June 22nd and Carnival d’été - Friday, June 23rd.

Safe Kids Week - June 5 – 9:  Parachute Safe Kids Week is a national awareness campaign developed to bring attention to predictable and preventable injuries in children. Taking place June 5 – 11, 2017 this year is focused on promoting safe and active transportation: Walk, Bike, Wheel, which includes walking, cycling, skateboarding, scootering and other wheeled activities.  This year’s theme is everyday superhero, which encourages children to become leaders in road safety by learning how to stay active and keep themselves and their loved ones safe on their travels to and from school, to the bus stop, and around their neighbourhood. Parents can guide their child’s activities by modelling safe behaviour and practices on the road, and also being aware of their child’s skill level.  (Poster attached)

Congratulations to grade 2 teacher Mary-Lee and her partner Wesley on the birth of their baby boy last Monday.

JQ Garage Sale
PLEASE  give us a hand selling the items you have so kindly donated!
We are in good shape for sorting and setting up....Thank you!!
But we need help for selling all day.
We have only 10 people to sell in the morning and 9 sellers in the afternoon.
We have about 9 stations. That's about 1 person per station. Each station has about 5 tables.  We need more help!

We are ALL busy. Please take an hour out of your day and come give us a hand.  PAC is hoping to run just this one community fundraiser. We all need to lend a hand if it is to be successful. 10 people in the morning and 9 in the afternoon is not enough for an enjoyable experience for everyone. You do not need to stay all day. If you can only come for an hour, we will welcome and appreciate you!  However, please do sign up if you are intending to come so we can plan better.  Please just indicate after your name, from when to when you are able to come. ie. Joe Black 10-11   Thank you!  Sign up here.

We need a few odd things:
  • Several coolers, please put your name on them!  We need these for keeping our hotdogs cold before they are cooked and to keep water and juices cold.
  • And extra fabric bags (like the grocery ones) that you would like to donate. We use them to give to people for their large purchases!
  • Clothes hangers!! We need LOTS. If anyone has a stash they are willing to label or part with, please bring them to the learning commons room tomorrow morning. We need to find a way to display all of our lovely donated clothes! Even if you have a few we'll be thankful!
  • We need a full propane tank!
You are welcome to bring donations to the school at anytime tomorrow. Bring them to the learning commons room on the bottom floor by the music room. Don't forget that jewellery that has sunk to the bottom of your jewellery box, or your child's bracelets and purses that they have grown out of. The bike that is too small for them, or the lego that is collecting dust!  We take it all, big or small!

You are welcome to come and join the sorting and pricing party tomorrow afternoon from 1:30 onwards until we finish! Also in the learning commons room.

Thank you for all you have done to make this event a JQ community success!
See you Saturday!

Track & Field
We are having a great turnout for practices despite the weather!  Thank you to all parents and teachers for supporting our team.  We especially appreciate the coaching skills and time of our wonderful grade 11 alumnus, Katia Lumb.
Track and field practices will continue Monday and Wednesday next week from 8:00 to 8:45 am.  If you need to borrow or buy a JQ shirt for the mini-meets, please email Lori at patandlori@telus.net and I will arrange to get one to you at practice next week.
First mini-meet is Tuesday, May 9 for grades 6 and 7’s and Thursday May 11 for grades 3, 4 and 5 at 3:30 pm at Camosun track.  We will meet in the gym right after school and we will walk over together.  Parents, please pick up your kids at the track by 5 pm.   Athletes participating must have been to at least 2 practices to compete in the mini-meets and must wear a JQ shirt.  Please ensure your child has a snack, water bottle and is dressed appropriately for the weather.  Each athlete needs to compete in at least 1 Mini-Meet to participate in the Final District Meet on May 24 at Point Grey high school.  If you can volunteer at the mini-meets, please email Lori at patandlori@telus.net.  We really appreciate your help for the relays.
On Tuesday and Thursday mini-meets, the girls will start on the track and the boys on field.  The events next week will be 4x100 and 600m for juniors and 800m for seniors.  The field events will rotate every 15min in the order of: High jump, Shot put, Long jump.  Please encourage participation as it is a fun, low key meet to get exposure to the different events.
For our grades K-2, we will have a fun JQ mini-meet on Monday May 29 at 8 am.  Please have your child wear their JQ shirt and please bring some muffins or fruit to share afterwards.
Please contact Lori at patandlori@telus.net if you have any questions or concerns.
Thanks very much!
Lori

TECH POLL
Thank you for participating in the tech poll.   It is important to PAC that we move forward with an opportunity for input and majority support.  We had 206 people participate, a record level of participation, thank you.  We also thank you for your comments and will work towards addressing those needs going forward whenever possible.
Of the 206 responses we had, 12% felt they could not support supplementing tech, and 88% were in favour of supplementing tech.  As the vote was in favour, we will be moving forward with our fundraising plan:

1) If you would like to make a direct donation to our tech campaign please see our
PAC website (jqpac.com) for more details.

2) Our Great Big JQ Garage Sale is scheduled for
Saturday, May 27th.   Clean out your closets, cupboards and under your beds! Bag it and bring it to the Learning Commons room in the basement by the Music Room at the school on Friday May 26th after 1pm for sorting.  Or if necessary we will take donations earlier in the week. Think creatively on how you could support our garage sale. Maybe it's baking a pie, or offering a service. Check out our information page on our website for all of the details and ways you can help. To sign up for donations, services, and baked goods, see our volunteer sign up page.  There is no limit to the number of donations or helpers. We just had to start somewhere! Or if you would like to be involved in organizing please email jqpacexec@gmail.com

3) As part of the garage sale, but a separate fundraiser, we will be collecting all of the unsold clothing and materials and bagging them up for
Cash For Clothes. For more details see our website. To volunteer sign up here.

4) Our small business and corporate fundraising group will mobilize and begin that piece of the campaign.

As the money is received in sufficient quantities for bulk purchasing, we will begin ordering immediately so that our children benefit as soon as possible.
