SCHOOL FEES:  The following fees have now been added to the School Cash Online system.    The following is a link to the system:  https://vsb.schoolcashonline.com

School Supply Fee for 2018/19:  The Vancouver School Board offers the service of purchasing basic school supplies in bulk at wholesale prices and passing the cost savings on to families.  The School Supply Fee for 2018 – 2019 is $25.00 per student. This fee covers basic consumable school supplies used for students’ personal use such as paper, writing tools, glue sticks, erasers, exercise books and art supplies.  Supplies are provided for the full year.

Agenda Fee:  Students in Divisions 2 to 13 have been issued with Student Agendas and the cost is $10.00. School agendas/planners are a valuable tool for teaching children how to organize and plan for school. While students are not required to have an agenda/planner it is designed to assist students with the skills of organization and time management and is a very useful communication tool often used between teachers and families.

Division 7 only:  Payment for nine yoga sessions with Panda Yoga Vancouver

Division 8 onlyField trip payments for UBC Botanical Garden and Vancouver Art Gallery

Any families who would like to receive a subsidy to cover partial/full costs of the above fees are requested to contact Mme Celina Mau in confidence at the following email address:  cmau@vsb.bc.ca

If online payment is not an option, parents can pay by cash or cheque payable to Ecole Jules Quesnel.  If you are submitting a cash payment, please enclose your payment in an envelope with your child/children’s name.  If it is important that we know who payments are from so that we can enter it on the system as a cash payment.    Thank you.

SNACKS AND LUNCHESPlease provide a small healthy snack such as a piece of fruit for the first recess break at 10:30.  This keeps the students going until lunch at 12:10 pm.   Also, please check in with your child that they have enough to eat and that they are actually eating the lunch you provide.  Thank you.

Safe Arrival and Reporting Student AbsencesStudent safety is of paramount importance at the Vancouver School District.  Ensuring student safety is a shared responsibility.  In order to assist schools, we ask parents to notify schools of student absences.  If your child will be absent from school, please phone the school to report this absence as early as possible.  Parents should leave a message on a dedicated answering service by calling 604-713-5159 and then entering a two-digit extension which is 39 for Jules Quesnel.  Messages will be received before the office is open.  School offices are busy places:  consistently notifying the school in advance of your child’s absence will significantly improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Safe Arrival Morning Routine.

To report your child’s absence – please call:  604-713-5159 ext 39 as early as possible on the first day of the absence.

Sign-In / Sign-OutParents who pick up their child during the school day (e.g. for a dental appointment) must sign their child out of school in the black binder on the table in front of the PAC Notice Board and then sign back in when the child returns.   This is done to ensure the safety of the children.  Students may sign themselves in and out but must have the written permission of a parent.
Students who occasionally go home for lunch, need to provide a note to their teacher in advance or on the day. If a student goes home daily for lunch then their parent needs to provide the school office with a note outlining this. For safety reasons, students without parental permission are not allowed to leave the school grounds at any time.

Late Arrivals:  If your child is late for school and the teacher has taken attendance, both in the morning or after lunch, the student must report to the office.    There will be a push for punctuality this year as students’ frequent late arrivals are disruptive to all learners and teachers.

School Hours
08:55 Warning bell
09:00  Instruction begins
10:30 – 10:50 Recess break
12:10 – 12:57 Lunch
3:00 pm Dismissal

Before and After School SupervisionTeaching staff will be on supervision duty on the school grounds 15 minutes before the start of school and 15 minutes at the end of school.  Please be on time to pick-up your child as school staff are not responsible for the safety of students outside of these hours.

Student Photo DayAll students will have their individual student photo taken on Monday, September 17th by Lifetouch.  We usually start with the younger grades, grade 1’s at 9:00 am, followed by Kindergarten, grade 2, 3, etc.    Flyers will be sent home next week.

We are a “Nut/Allergy Aware” schoolJules Quesnel is an allergy aware school. Students and staff may have severe allergies to various foods, especially nuts. To help reduce the risk of allergen exposure, families are encouraged to try to send their children to school with nut free snacks and lunches. As well, it is suggested that families of at-risk students instruct their children to only eat food brought from home, and that all families instruct their children not to share food, food utensils and food containers, and to wash their hands before and after eating. More specific information regarding foods to avoid may be communicated by classroom teachers.

Sign-in Procedures for Visitors in the School:  If you are volunteering in a classroom, library or lunchroom and/or will be at the school for a period of time, please sign-in and pick-up a VSB Visitor’s Badge from the Office.

Traffic and Drop-off Zones:  Thank you for respecting the drop-off zone on West 14th ONLY.  Please do not drop off on Crown Street and please do not leave your vehicle unattended on Crown Street or West 14th.   Vehicles seen reversing on the corners of West 14th, West 15th and Crown will be reported.  It is difficult to see small children crossing the sidewalk at these two intersections, especially if reversing.

Professional Development DayFriday, September 21st – no school for students.

Mobile Devices:  Unless requested by their teacher for use during school activities, students are discouraged from bringing mobile devices to school. Any mobile device, including cell phones, that students do bring to school must be kept in their backpacks or with their teacher during the school day.  Students should not have mobile devices, including cell phones, on their person during the school day, including recess and lunch, without teacher permission. Students found using cell phones or other mobile devices without permission during the school day will be reminded that their devices need to be stored in their backpack or with their teacher. Students who persist in using mobile devices at school without permission will have their devices confiscated and turned in to the Principal’s office.  Parents will be contacted by the Principal to retrieve confiscated devices.  In case of emergency, parents who need to contact their children during the school day are asked to do so via the office.  Adults in the school are asked to help model responsible cell phone and other mobile device use by moderating their cell phone and mobile device use when in the school.

Label belongingsIt would be helpful to track down missing lunch bags, water bottles and items of clothing (especially outerwear) if your child’s items are labelled.  Thank you for considering this.

Meet the Teacher Night (for students in grades 1 – 7):  Will be held on Thursday, September 20th from 5:00 to 6:00 pm.  Two sessions will take place from 5:00 to 5:30 pm and from 5:30 to 6:00 pm.  If you only have one child in the school, you need only attend one of the sessions.  Please note “Meet the Teacher” is for parents only, students are not required to attend and no childminding will be available at the school.  Signs will be posted with room numbers.

Cross-Country Running ProgramWe would like to start this up on Wednesday, September 12th with practice sessions twice a week on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 8:00 to 8:45 am.  Meet on the steps at JQ at 8:00 am sharp.   All grades welcome but parents must accompany runners in Kindergarten, grades 1, 2 and 3.  Please return the completed Permission Form to the envelope on the office window.  Hard copies were handed out today to those interested and are also available on the office window. Forms Packages:  A number of forms will be sent home in the next few weeks for parents to sign, check and return to the school.  Please return this paperwork promptly so that we have up-to-date contact information for families.

JQ Musical “Mary Poppins”

Hello JQ parents and students and welcome back to school!

JQ is pleased to announce this year's musical theatre production will be Mary Poppins directed by Colleen Cotton productions.  The show will take place in June and rehearsals will be every Friday after school beginning this month.  There will be additional rehearsals on some Pro D days as we get closer to the show and a commitment to attend dress rehearsals after school in the week of the show.  The cost of being part of the musical is $400 for the year (please make checks out to George Cotton Productions).

Many students auditioned at the end of June.  If your child has already auditioned you do not need to audition again now.  For those who have not yet auditioned Colleen will be holding auditions next week:

Date: Monday Sept 10th and Wednesday Sept 12th
Time: Lunchtime and after school
Place: JQ Music Room

Please sign up with your child's name, and only one child per time slot.  If necessary, callbacks will be held on Thursday and Friday, Sept 13 and 14 at lunchtime and after school.

For the audition (5 minutes)  your child will be asked to sing a short song, and say a few words, no need to spend lots of time preparing, they can just sing their favorite song or even Happy Birthday.

The musicals have been a great success over the last 2 years and we hope your child will take part.  Every child will get a part in the show.
We look forward to a great year of musical theatre!

Dear JQ Families,

As the school year comes to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Jules Quesnel parent community for their ongoing support and dedication in making our school an excellent place for student learning. Goodbye from Mme Fabienne,
Dear Parents, Students, Colleagues and Friends of the JQ Community,
It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing my retirement at the end of the school year.  For the last 30 years, I had the privilege to teach young Vancouverites of all ages.  For the last three years, I celebrated and shared the joy of reading with your precious ones.  Thank you all for being so supportive and believing in the power of reading.
Sincerely,
Mme. Fabienne Goulet

Staff Appreciation LunchThank you to all those who contributed food and helped transform our staffroom at the Staff Appreciation Lunch on Tuesday.   Staff were amazed by the array of food on offer, so many choices, all of which were delicious.  Thank you for treating us so well, it was lovely and very much appreciated by all staff.

JQ WE Group
The JQ WE Group would like to thank the entire JQ community for helping to support its many initiatives over the past school year.  With your support, the JQ WE Group raised awareness and funds to support local and global causes through eight initiatives, far beyond the goals the students set for themselves…amazing!

WE Scare Hunger
WE Create Change
WE Are Silent
WE Bake for Change
WE Holiday Sale
WE Are One
WE Walk for Water
Zinc Saves Lives

And…next week we will run the WE Concession Stand at the Beauty and the Beast performances.

We would also like to share the exciting news that the JQ WE Group received one of 20 national awards of $2,500 from Robin Hood in recognition of the Group’s efforts in the WE Bake for Change campaign.  This contribution will also be donated to support the water initiatives in Tanzania, which has been the area of focus this year for the JQ WE Group.

To date the JQ WE Group has raised $6,832.70

We wish our grade 7 WE Group members the best of luck as they graduate to new schools and our grade 6 members will take what they have learned this year to lead the Group next year.

The Group will need one or more parent volunteers to help support and guide the students in their efforts next year.  The parent(s) volunteer(s) would ideally be parents of participating students, but parents from any year are welcome to help lead this inspiring group of students.

(Please note that the WE Group is open to all students in grades 6 and 7.)

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me by email at dharinit@shaw.ca

Thank you again to everyone for their support.

WE Walk for Water – TOMORROW AFTER SCHOOL
The WE Organization will be holding the first global WE Walk for Water on April 27.  However, as this is a pro-d day at JQ, the JQ WE Group members decided to hold our WE Walk for Water event after school tomorrow:
Wednesday, April 25.

Please note that ALL WE Group members (as well as siblings and friends) are welcome to participate in Wednesday’s event….and if Wednesday doesn’t work, please feel free to Walk for Water on your own, or with your friends, on Friday April 27.

This event is to build awareness about and to raise funds for issues related to accessing clean water.  As you know, this year the JQ WE Group is supporting initiatives to increase access to clean water in Tanzania, so this is a perfect event to support the chosen pillar.

WE Group members will be requesting pledges for evey kilometre they walk carrying jugs of water to raise funds.  The suggested distance to walk is 5km.  Anyone interested in sponsoring this event with a pledge, can do so through one of the WE Group members.

Together we learned that….
”although clean water is a basic human right, more than 800 million people lack access to it.  When communities have access to clean water, girls can attend school, parents can run sustainable farms and families can lead healthier lives.”

What’s amazing is that….
Just $25 gives one person clean water for life.

The JQ WE Group set a goal to impact 40 lives at this year’s fundraising event.

WE Group Wheelchair Basketball EventThank you all the JQ WE Group members that contributed to the success of the WE Are One Wheelchair Basketball event!  It was a very well-attended event and many students had an opportunity to participate throughout the day.
A very special thank you to Sian Blyth and her team (Orion and Michelle) at the BC Wheelchair Basketball Society (BCWBS) for the very generous contribution of their time and the wheelchairs.   Another special thank you to Abi Blyth for helping guide the students throughout the day.  Thank you to everyone for a great job…it was a very fun day, with lots of learning!

Beauty and the Beast A props appeal from "Beauty and the Beast".
We are putting together an "Inventor's Cart" for "Beauty and the Beast".
We are collecting anything that looks "fantastic" or "out of the ordinary." Anything that moves or whirls or twirls, elevates, moves sideways. Anything that looks like a crazy inventor dreamed it up. Things made out of Lego or Meccano, Tinker Toys, building blocks, kitchen gadgets, any household gadgets, whirring motors, old toys that move. Components from old games. We will attach these items to a 4x3 cart.
We also need blocks of Styrofoam, old broom handles, duct tape.
We also need a BIG (oversized) wooden chair (for Gaston). We also need a trestle table about 4 feet high (or a narrow, long table of some sort).
Please drop off these items in the music room or email me if you need things picked up colleencotton@gmail.com
Thanks,
Colleen

Byng Student-Led Book DriveByng students will be collecting “Books For Me”, an organization that allows children living in poverty in Vancouver, whose families cannot afford books, the opportunity to choose and keep books that interest them.  Books can be dropped off at Jules Quesnel between May 1st and May 11th in front of the computer lab.   Thank you for your support.
