Pink Day:

Wednesday, February 27th is Pink Day across Canada!  All students are invited to wear pink to school to send a message to each other and the world that bullying is not okay!

Pink Day is not just about “bullying” in general.  As you may know, Pink Day started in Nova Scotia after a boy was bullied for being gay and wearing his favourite pink shirt on the first day of school.  The following day, students wore pink to school in his support, and the tradition has continued ever since!

A key message for the JQ community is that we support boys who choose to wear pink and we do not support bullying of any kind – between children, between adults and children, and between adults!  Please take a moment to think about how you model respect for others in your life and how you teach that message to your children and the people around you.

Please come and visit our school next week and read the pink shirt messages written by students and teachers that will be lining the hallways of our school.  We are proud to be a welcoming school for LGBTQ people and recognize we all have work to do in making every student feel safe and respected for who they are, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation.

Thank you, JQ!

The staff at Ecole Jules Quesnel

Measles Outbreak:  Please find attached a letter from the VSB regarding the recent outbreak of measles in the francophone school community.

Call for Photos for the JQ YearbookWe would be grateful to receive any photos of your children at school, on a field trip or at a school event for inclusion in the Yearbook.  Please email to:  zaraprevost@gmail.com.  Thank you.

PAC NEWS

Parent Education Poll

We are hard at working looking for quality and interesting parent ed options.   We've found two that interest us and are interested to see if they appeal to you as well.

One is Screenagers. We hosted this film 2 years ago, however, we've had some requests to repeat it. Check it out and see what you think. Here's an excerpt from the website:
SCREENAGERS,  takes a deeply personal approach as it probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction.

The other option that we found compelling was a talk by Tanis Frame: Decide to Thrive! Here's an Excerpt:

Are you DONE with living life on the hamster wheel in automatic pilot?

Let's stop spending our days feverishly ticking off the items on our to-do lists with no time or energy left to truly be who we're meant to be in the world!

Tanis has created RIDICULOUSLY SIMPLE TOOLS that radically transform the way  YOU LIVE….because you deserve to thrive… DEEPLY.

Your responses will tailor whether we do one, both or none!
Here's the link to the 30 second poll so you can provide your input:

Professional Development Day – Friday, January 25thA reminder that there is no school for students tomorrow.

Proposed School Calendar for 2019-20; 2020-21; 2021-22The updated proposed school calendar for the next 3 school years has now been posted on the VSB website.  We work closely with our neighbouring districts to ensure alignment of dates as much as possible.  https://www.vsb.bc.ca/Calendars/Pages/School-Year-Calendar.aspx

This calendar includes proposed dates for Winter Break and Spring Break for 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22 - as well as proposed dates for Non-Instructional/Professional Days for the 2019-20 school year.

Should parents wish to provide any feedback, they are welcome to do so by emailing calendar@vsb.bc.ca.  Feedback will be received until February 15th, and will be taken into consideration when the calendar is finalized.  We anticipate that the final school calendar will be approved by the Board and published by early March.  Thank you.

YearbookIt is time for the school to order Yearbooks.  Don’t miss out on your children’s memories.  If you are interested in a JQ Yearbook, please order before Monday, February 11thWe have a limited print run due to cost and may not have extra copies available for purchase.  Every student will have their individual student photo in the book and there were also be several candid photos for each class as well as various JQ activities and events.  The Yearbook will come out in June.

Cost for this keepsake is $16.00.  Options for ordering:

1)      Online through www.schoolcashonline.com before Monday, February 11th.

2)      Cash or cheque payable to Ecole Jules Quesnel to be handed in at the office by Monday, February 11th.

Kindergarten Sibling Registration:  A reminder to parents with siblings entering Kindergarten in September 2019, that the Choice Online Application is now open:  https://kchoice.vsb.bc.ca and will close on Monday, February 4th at 4 pm.  If you have already registered at your English catchment school but have not yet received your PEN, please contact Liz in the office.  Deadline for kindergarten application at the English catchment school is Thursday, January 31st, this is a required first step for all children entering kindergarten in September 2019.  The second step is to register for the choice program online.

Late Arrivals:   We have many students arriving late for school each day and would like to ask for your support in addressing this issue.  A late entrance is disruptive both to the teacher and other students, a late student misses out on important instructions at the beginning of the day as well as the opportunity of connecting with peers and teacher, it also gives the message to students that punctuality is not important.    Instruction starts promptly at 9:00 am, the warning bell rings at 08:55 am and at this time, students may enter the building and make their way to the classroom.  While we appreciate it can be difficult at times with young children, we encourage all parents to do their best to ensure that their child is on the school grounds before the warning bell at 8:55 am so that students enter the school calmly and ready for learning as soon as class begins.   Students arriving late should report to the office to ensure that they are not marked absent or parents can call the Safe Arrival line to let us know that their child will be arriving late due to an appointment, etc.  Tel:  604-713-5159, ext. 39.

Supervision Before and After schoolA reminder that there is supervision for students from 8:45 to 9:00 am and from 3:00 to 3:15 pm and that school staff are not responsible for student’s safety outside of these hours.

Are you returning to Jules Quesnel in September 2019?  In order for the VSB to plan staffing and class size organization for next year, could you kindly let us know as soon as possible if your child will NOT be returning to JQ in September 2019.  If your child will be returning, NO ACTION is required on your part and your child will automatically move to the next grade.  If you are unsure, any information you are able to provide the school would be most helpful.  Thank you.

Report CardsAll students will receive their reports cards over this week and next.   Teachers will let families know when their report cards are being sent home.
