Seasonal Hampers:  A reminder to families that the hampers for our sister school, Mount Pleasant Elementary, are being assembled and delivered on Monday, December 17th.

·         Not sure what to contribute, check your child’s agenda but any non perishable food or household supply is appreciated. You are welcome to bypass your suggested staples in favor of a gift for the family.  Gifts for parents are appreciated too!  Gift Certificates are particularly welcome.  London Drugs, Superstore, and Walmart are particularly great as household and grocery items can be bought.  Gently used items are welcome, however please ensure they are "like new" in condition. Great time to pass along your "regifts"!

·         If you are able to volunteer assembling the hampers or with driving and delivery to Mount Pleasant, please let your class parent know.  At least two volunteers per class are needed.  Assembly will begin first thing at 9:00 am in the school gym and should be finished by 11:30 am when volunteer drivers can pick-up the hampers for delivery.

·         New this year!  We will be collecting hoodies and underwear for Covenant House. Gently used hoodies welcome! (underwear new).  All adult sizes welcome and appreciated.  Youth are aged from 16-24.  Queen Elizabeth Annex will be helping us out with this initiative.  Thanks QEA!  Box for the hoodies and underwear will be at the PAC table across from the office.

·         Questions? Ask your class parents or wing PAC a note athttp://jqpacexec@gmail.com

JQ Cross-Country 2018 Wrap Up

We had a fabulous season of great weather and enthusiastic runners. Over 80 JQ athletes participated this season. Thank you to all the parents who supported our team and to our wonderful teacher sponsors: Madame Lucy, Madame Alexis, and Madame Chow!

The District Cross-Country Meet took place on Thursday, October 18th at Trout Lake with 2675 runners! JQ represented us very well and it was terrific to see the kids showing great school spirit in our red shirts and cheering each other on! A special shout out to our Kindergarten athlete, Alicia, who was JQ’s only K to participate in all the meets! Alicia even had an unfortunate fall at the beginning of the District Meet and got back up to finish her race. Bravo Alicia! There were many great performances at Trout Lake and races consisted of about 200 athletes per race. A big congratulations as well to Grade 3 girl, Bonica, who won all of her races this season! Here were some of our top 20 results (our apologies for anyone we may have missed): Grade 7 boys: Matthew (4th), Sam (5th); Grade 7 girls: Nyla (3rd); Grade 6 girls: Kate (5th); Grade 5 boys: Gregor (10th), Seppy (14th); Grade 5 girls: Jessica (2nd), Taylor (3rd); Grade 4 boys: Dylan (8th), Hudson (15th); Grade 4 girls: Osha (20th); Grade 3 boys: Freddie (16th), Grade 3 girls: Bonica (1st).

Halloween CostumesIf you will be purchasing or making a Halloween costume over the next couple of weeks, we would like to give parents a few reminders:
·         Masks will not be permitted in school
·         Students should not bring toy guns or weapons as part of their costume
·         How not to culturally appropriate Halloween:
Cultural Appropriation:  To take parts (symbols, artifacts, dress, words, practices, etc.) from a culture that is not your own. This can happen in a variety of forms but often around Halloween it involves wearing 'costumes' that may have some significance to other cultures.

Preparing for potential lower temperatures at Jules Quesnel
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Following a pipeline rupture near Prince George on Tuesday October 9, Fortis BC requested that all consumers conserve natural gas.  As a result, Vancouver School Board building engineers have reduced gas consumption by starting gas fueled heating systems later, turning them off earlier and adjusting system settings in all schools and buildings throughout the District.  Staff have also been advised to close windows and doors, where appropriate, to maintain heat. This has been underway for a few days.
Please be assured, we do not expect these measures to have major impacts on our school day.  However, during this time, please ensure your child has appropriate clothing to remain comfortable while at school.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.
Claudette Alain, Principal

Mme Alain’s ReturnWe are pleased to inform you that Mme Claudette Alain will be returning on Tuesday, October 9th and we look forward to welcoming her back. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mme Celina Mau for stepping in as Acting Principal, and for her guidance and wisdom during the busy first month of school

Cross Country:   We had another lovely day for our mini-meet this week at Jericho.  Congratulations to all the JQ competitors on their hard finishes.

Our athletes have really caught onto the idea of trying to keep a pace that works for them as individuals (hard to do in such an exciting environment) and then to give it their all as they approach the finish line.  Great work cheering each other on. Your school spirit is infectious!

Congratulations to our top 10 finishers (my apologies for anyone forgotten): Grade 7 girls: Nyla (1st), Myah (8th), Grade 1 girls: Alicia (10th), Grade 2 boys: Ethan (9th), Grade 3 girls: Bonica (1st), Kajal (6th), Grade 3 boys: Freddie (5th), Grade 4 girls: Serena (9th), Grade 4 boys: Dylan (4th), Hudson (7th), Luke (8th), Grade 5 girls: Jessica (1st), Taylor (2nd), Grade 5 boys: Gregor (2nd), Seppi (4th), Willem (10th), Grade 6 girls: Kate (3rd), Grade 6 boys: Max (10th).

A big thanks to the parents (Andrew, Mayumi, Willa and Kayoko) and teachers, Madame Lucy and Madame Alexis, for helping marshall the race.

Next week, practice is on Wednesday morning at 8-8:45am and the mini meet is at Balaclava Park (4594 Balaclava Street @ West 29th Avenue) on Thursday, October 11 at 3:30pm.  Final district meet is on Thursday, October 18 at 1:00pm at Trout Lake - please note there will be no practice on the morning of Wednesday, October 17th.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

One to One Volunteering

Become a ONE TO ONE volunteer tutor and open the world of reading to a child!
For nearly 30 years, ONE TO ONE Literacy Society has been helping struggling
young readers in Vancouver-area public schools with the opportunity to practice reading with a caring, patient adult.  We know that this time spent with students directly impacts the student’s confidence and their chance of succeeding academically and in life.

Do you have 2 – 3 hours a week during school hours to work one-on-one with students?  Our volunteer tutors read once a week, either in the mornings or afternoons, at a specific school, from October to June. You will be developing a relationship with the students that will help them bloom into successful readers.

You must be 18 years old, be proficient in English and/or French and complete a criminal background check.  We will provide you with training and ongoing support. Training sessions for  new volunteers will be held in September 2018.  We are looking for volunteer tutors in Vancouver, North Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, New Westminster and Coquitlam. Feeling Welcome and Safe at Ecole Jules Quesnel

As you may know, the BC Ministry of Education as well as the Vancouver School Board District is committed to ensuring that all students and families feel safe and included. One of the ways that people sometimes tease or discriminate is through homophobic or transphobic language and remarks. This type of discrimination is not acceptable and is included in both the BC Human Rights Code and in our own school's Code of Conduct. To help students and staff feel safe and included, the BC Ministry of Education and the VSB asks all schools to have one or two SOGI School Leads (SOGI stands for Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity).

Madame Campbell and Madame Cassap-Hanson are the SOGI School Leads at Ecole Jules Quesnel this year. Our role is to help create a safe and inclusive school community for everyone here.  Students, parents and teachers are welcome to come and talk to either of us if they are seeking support or resources around issues related to sexual orientation or gender identity. These issues might include homophobic or transphobic name-calling, teasing and bullying, and helping same-sex parented families or trans folks feel welcome in the school community. We can also help teachers and parents to find great books and resources that celebrate family diversity and respect.  All of our staff are allies in this important effort.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or would simply like to introduce yourself!

Madame Campbell (Kindergarten teacher) and Madame Cassap-Hanson (Grade 5 teacher)

Volunteer Drivers’ Form Update:  We have now received information that the VSB will not require parent volunteer drivers to submit a Drivers Abstract from ICBC.   Our apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Criminal Records Check:  Volunteers at Jules Quesnel can submit an online request for a Criminal Records Check if required by the school.  Such a request may be necessary when parents/guardians volunteer for overnight camps or to help in the swimming pool changing rooms, as these are considered “vulnerable” situations for students.  Here is the link for the Criminal Records Check

https://justice.gov.bc.ca/eCRC/home.htm, Access Code:  RQJSLQVMSY.

Parking LotFor safety reasons, please do not walk through/across the parking lot between 8:50 am and 9:00 am and between 3:00 and 3:30 pmVehicles are arriving and backing up to park and little ones are not always easily visible.

Early Dismissal & Conferences:  A reminder that there will be early dismissal for conferences on the following two days:  Wednesday, October 3 & Thursday, October 4 at 2 pm for all students.  Your child’s teacher will be forwarding information next week on how to book a time to meet with you.

Student Safety and Traffic Concerns

·         The only Drop-Off Zone for Jules Quesnel is on West 14th Avenue in front of the school/pool parking lot.  If there is a line-up, please do not park on the crosswalk at the corner of Crown and West 14th Ave.  Do not leave your vehicle unattended especially with small children inside.

·         Please do not use the school parking lot for pick-up or drop-off when you are running late.  There are many kindergarten children in this area at these times.

·         No backing-up on the corner of West 15th and Crown St. where there is also a cross-walk.  Small children on the cross-walk are not easily visible when you are backing up.

For the safety of all JQ students, we would ask that families respect the traffic rules around the school, slow  down and drive carefully.  Thank you for your cooperation.

PAC General MeetingAll JQ parents are invited for an important General PAC meeting in the library.

SCHOOL CASH ONLINEIf you are new to the school, your child will be bringing home a letter on how to register for the online payment session.  Copy is also attached.  If you have already registered last year, including students who have transferred from the Annex, your information has been carried over.

SCHOOL FEES:  The following fees have now been added to the School Cash Online system.    The following is a link to the system:  https://vsb.schoolcashonline.com

School Supply Fee for 2018/19:  The Vancouver School Board offers the service of purchasing basic school supplies in bulk at wholesale prices and passing the cost savings on to families.  The School Supply Fee for 2018 – 2019 is $25.00 per student. This fee covers basic consumable school supplies used for students’ personal use such as paper, writing tools, glue sticks, erasers, exercise books and art supplies.  Supplies are provided for the full year.

Agenda Fee:  Students in Divisions 2 to 13 have been issued with Student Agendas and the cost is $10.00. School agendas/planners are a valuable tool for teaching children how to organize and plan for school. While students are not required to have an agenda/planner it is designed to assist students with the skills of organization and time management and is a very useful communication tool often used between teachers and families.

Division 7 only:  Payment for nine yoga sessions with Panda Yoga Vancouver

Division 8 onlyField trip payments for UBC Botanical Garden and Vancouver Art Gallery

Any families who would like to receive a subsidy to cover partial/full costs of the above fees are requested to contact Mme Celina Mau in confidence at the following email address:  cmau@vsb.bc.ca

If online payment is not an option, parents can pay by cash or cheque payable to Ecole Jules Quesnel.  If you are submitting a cash payment, please enclose your payment in an envelope with your child/children’s name.  If it is important that we know who payments are from so that we can enter it on the system as a cash payment.    Thank you.

SNACKS AND LUNCHESPlease provide a small healthy snack such as a piece of fruit for the first recess break at 10:30.  This keeps the students going until lunch at 12:10 pm.   Also, please check in with your child that they have enough to eat and that they are actually eating the lunch you provide.  Thank you.

TERRY FOX RUNThe school will hold its annual Terry Fox Run on Thursday, September 27th at 2 pm.  The whole school will participate with younger children running on the field and older students running around the Lord Byng/JQ Block.

SCENT AWAREA JQ staff member has some sensitivity to perfumes, colognes or strongly scented hand creams.  Would you please keep this in mind.  Your cooperation would make a big difference.  Thank you.
