Qea Update

Welcome to Mme Donna Emeno who will be in for the Vice-Principal, Mme Teresa Wells.  Mme Emeno is a retired principal from Hastings Elementary, Sir James Douglas Elementary, Queen Elizabeth Elementary, and Emily Carr Elementary.  She is quite familiar with the lovely community and is very happy to be here.  She will provide continuity and support to the QEA Community until Mme Teresa returns.

Friday October 19th – NO SCHOOL

School is not in session on Friday Oct 19th.  Staff will be involved in professional development workshops and sessions taking place across the district and province.

October 24th and 25th Parent Teacher conferences & 2pm Early dismissal days

Teachers are looking forward to having you attend the upcoming parent teacher conferences next week on Wednesday or Thursday October 24th and 25th.  Please note that there is a 2 pm dismissal on both those days.  These conferences provide an opportunity to meet the teacher and to learn more about your child’s educational program.  Remember to fill out your time request form and return to your child’s teacher asap as they are due today.

October 26th Field trip

The whole school will be heading to the Pumpkin Patch on Friday October 26th.  Dress accordingly to the weather!  This will be a fun day for all!

October 18 Earthquake Drill

QEA will be participating in the province wide earthquake drill tomorrow, October 18th at 10:18am.  The school has a detailed emergency evacuation plan following the Vancouver Board of Education Emergency Management Program.  This will be one of two earthquake drills we have this school year, the other being the Big One at 2 on Thursday May 2nd 2019.

October 18 – Cross Country meet at Trout Lake early dismissal

If your child is involved in Cross country, please meet at Trout Lake beside the JQ banner.  Mme Emeno, will meet coaches, parents, and students there at 1pm.  Children involved in track should be picked up by 11:45 am to be driven to Trout Lake.  A more substantial morning snack and a lighter lunch to be eaten en route is a good option for the runners.

Bonjour QEA Families

Garden Update: All classes will be working in the QEA garden this year: Division 1 with Mme Susie and Mme Teresa and Divisions 2 – 4 primarily with M. Curtis. The activities included in the next few weeks are: harvesting kale to make kale chips and harvesting and drying seeds for planting next year. We are continuing to harvest apples from the trees and Divisions 1-3 will be making apple sauce with the apples – Division 4 made apple sauce last week.

Following the harvest, we will be planting garlic and then the majority of the work will be preparing the beds for winter – we will be planting Winter Rye Grass (to be dug in the in the Spring for fertilization) as well as mulching and covering the beds.

QEA is partnering with both Fresh Roots and Spuds in Tubs this year. For the potatoes, we will be keeping our potatoes in the library where all classes will participate in tending the plants through the winter and then share in the planting in the spring. Fresh Roots is working with M Curtis to facilitate workshops throughout the school year in the QEA garden for all divisions.

Please look for a call for parent volunteers in the upcoming weeks. We will need parents to help in each division and are also hoping to start a Club jardin either at lunch or after school – details about dates and times to follow.

Here comes the rain again…! As the fall weather returns next week, just a reminder to parents that QEA is an all-weather school. Whatever the weather, students are outside at recess and lunch every day and during Action School most days. Please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather conditions.

Meet the Teacher, PAC Welcome Back and Cross-Country Update 26 September

Hello QEA Families

Some quick reminders about Meet the Teacher, PAC Welcome Back and Cross-Country

Meet the Teacher is from 5PM – 6PM for Divisions 1, 3 & 4. While this event is normally just for adults, if you are unable to make other arrangements, children can attend - it can be a bit uninteresting for kids to listening to adults doing all the talking but we can make do!

All QEA families are invited to the PAC Welcome Back Pizza Party from 5:30 – 7:00 in the courtyard. Everyone is encouraged to come and share some pizza and other goodies and visit with each other. This is a wonderful time to greet old friends and to make new ones. Tickets can be purchased here or with cash at the event. Even if you are not planning to attend Meet the Teacher, please consider coming out for some yummy food and even better company.

Finally, if your child is competing in Cross Country, please collect them from the gym at 2:45 Wednesday afternoon.

À demain!

Terry Fox Run and Donations

This year, QEA is holding its annual Terry Fox Run on Friday, September 14th at Chaldecott Park. All week, the students had been learning about Terry and his Marathon of Hope. QEA has a long and proud history of raising a substantial sum of money relative to our size. Families are encouraged to visit the official Terry Fox website for QEA if they wish to donate. Donations can be made until September 28th. We have set a goal of $2,000 for this year, in order to beat our donation of last year. Thanks in advance for your support of this event.

PS: Over the next few days, please take a moment to visit the gym to see the banners that QEA received for being a part of the Terry Fox Run for more than

 25 years.

Running Club 2018-2019 -  Starts September 18th

Cross-Country Starts September 18th!

Our first Running Club practice will be Tuesday, September 18th at 8:15am at the school.

For those of you who are new to QEA and are curious, here’s the skinny:

Parent coaches, Glenn, Geoff and Amber coach Running Club. In the fall, the focus is Cross-Country. Practices are Tuesday and Thursday mornings, 8:15-8:55 AM.

Note: There will not be any QEA teachers present – each child must be accompanied by a parent. You can organize with other runners' parents to supervise your child. Neither the school nor the coaches are responsible for injuries, students left behind or unsupervised.

Parents are welcome to lace up and join us

·  Who is it for? All QEA students.

·  What do I need? Running shoes and water. Make sure children have dry socks/footwear (and sometimes clothes) to put on after practice.

·  Where will we go and What will we do? We'll do trail running in the forest near the school and short distance interval training at the school or Chaldecott.

·  Weather: Sprinkles and light showers? We will run. (Hard) Rain? We will not run. In between? In the case of iffy weather, we'll do our best to make a call re canceling by 7:50 AM on practice days.

All students wishing to particiapte in the Running Club must have a signed permission form on file. Please return this form to the office by Thursday, September 20th. If your child decides to join after this date, please complete the form at that time. In order to convey information re last minute cancellations (Rainy Days) or important notificaitons, parents are encourged to give Glenn their email/cell info. Email Glenn at glenn.saqui@gmail.com

QEA also participates in the VSB Cross-Country program, which is comprised of a few mini-meets (2-3 schools competing) with the season culminating in a District-wide meet at Trout Lake on October 18th. It’s not a long season but it’s intense! Super fun too – our team works very hard and does very well at the meets.

Hope to see you all on the 18th! Stay tuned for more information about the VSB Meet schedule!
