QEA e-Bulletin Week of February 25 2019

What beautiful sunshine we’ve been enjoying lately! Let’s hope it lasts.

This week, on Wednesday February 27th, we will be observing International Day of PINK! Students and staff are encouraged to wear pink and to think about what it means to be kind and to be a good friend. In keeping with this theme, and in alignment with our Code of Conduct and with our School Goal around Social/Emotional Learning, QEA will be having a mini Global School Play Day. Students are welcome to bring one or two toys or games to share with peers – the only requirement is that the toy or game must be battery/electricity free. There is no obligation to bring a toy/game - we have plenty here at the school. Following a brief assembly after lunch, students will be engaging in imaginative, unstructured play for the afternoon. There is more information about the importance of unstructured play in this Ted Talk.

Arriving Late & Leaving Early

Just a reminder that it is very important that you sign your child in should you arrive after 9:15 and that you sign your child out should you leave with your child prior to 3:00.

In the case of an emergency, we need to be able to account for everyone in the building and as we take attendance at 9:05, anyone arriving after this time who has not been signed in at the office will not be accounted for.

Additionally, if you have left with your child before 3PM and not signed them out, we will assume that that child is still on site and will have to account for them.

Thanks so much for your support with this important safety matter.

Procedures for Late Arrivals and Early Departures

February already! Where does the time go!? We had an action-packed week last week with both Tennis and Yoga in house. The kids are all really enjoying their yoga sessions with Mme Jie and as ever, M Gino was a great hit with his tennis lessons. Thanks again to the PAC for their very generous support of Tennis – we look forward to welcoming back M Gino in April for Round 2.

If you have not already done so, please remember that applications for choice programs for Kindergarten (French Immersion and others) closes TODAY at 4PM.

This week, we will mark the Lunar New Year on Tuesday with a brief assembly in the afternoon (around 2:15PM) when we will have a Lion Dance and pass out fortune cookies to all the kids (thanks Susan (Erik, Div 2) for picking up the cookies). Please see the attached ingredients list for any child who may have allergies of which we are not aware. Those children who cannot eat the cookies will get a mandarin orange and a fortune instead. Please let Mme Nancy know if your child CANNOT eat a fortune cookie.

Welcome to Mme Donna Emeno who will be in for the Vice-Principal, Mme Teresa Wells.  Mme Emeno is a retired principal from Hastings Elementary, Sir James Douglas Elementary, Queen Elizabeth Elementary, and Emily Carr Elementary.  She is quite familiar with the lovely community and is very happy to be here.  She will provide continuity and support to the QEA Community until Mme Teresa returns.

The whole school will be heading to the Pumpkin Patch on Friday October 26th.  Dress accordingly to the weather!  This will be a fun day for all!

QEA-Bulletin 28 Sept 2018

Bonjour QEA Families

Garden Update: All classes will be working in the QEA garden this year: Division 1 with Mme Susie and Mme Teresa and Divisions 2 – 4 primarily with M. Curtis. The activities included in the next few weeks are: harvesting kale to make kale chips and harvesting and drying seeds for planting next year. We are continuing to harvest apples from the trees and Divisions 1-3 will be making apple sauce with the apples – Division 4 made apple sauce last week.

Following the harvest, we will be planting garlic and then the majority of the work will be preparing the beds for winter – we will be planting Winter Rye Grass (to be dug in the in the Spring for fertilization) as well as mulching and covering the beds.

QEA is partnering with both Fresh Roots and Spuds in Tubs this year. For the potatoes, we will be keeping our potatoes in the library where all classes will participate in tending the plants through the winter and then share in the planting in the spring. Fresh Roots is working with M Curtis to facilitate workshops throughout the school year in the QEA garden for all divisions.

Please look for a call for parent volunteers in the upcoming weeks. We will need parents to help in each division and are also hoping to start a Club jardin either at lunch or after school – details about dates and times to follow.

Here comes the rain again…! As the fall weather returns next week, just a reminder to parents that QEA is an all-weather school.
