September 29th has been declared Orange Shirt Day. This day throughout Canada is used to commemorate the experiences of aboriginal survivors and descendants of Canada’s residential schools.
To develop our understanding of this experience and the impact that residential schools have had on aboriginal communities our Aboriginal Enhancement Worker Chad Carpenter has been coordinating with the District Aboriginal Education Team to develop an educational opportunity for our school on Orange Shirt Day.
This event has been planned for Friday September 29th during period 2-2. Chad has invited Squamish Elder Wes Nahanee and the District Vice Principal for Aboriginal Education Chas Desjarlais to address the school to teach our students about the experiences and residual effects of the Residential Schools Program on aboriginal peoples both in BC and throughout Canada.
