Nootka Helps Out with the BC Wildfires

The Meet the Teacher Night on September 21 featured the culmination of our "fun(d)raiser" in support of Horse Lake Elementary School outside of 100 Mile House, BC.  It all started with a conversation among Nootka staff expressing interest in supporting people who were affected by the horrific interior wildfires this summer.  This led to our identifying a school community that could use our support--Horse Lake Elementary, a school of 160 students.  While the community may not have experienced much property or possession loss, the emotional toll was very significant and some of the families did suffer financially.  We wanted to simply express to them our support and postive thoughts and to send them a little something that they might enjoy in some positive way. Well, true to Nootka form, our community rallied strong and in that one night, one PAC bakesale raised $535.00 to send to Horse Lake School!  Prior to the Meet the Teacher fundraiser, students created two large bright and colourful banners with their own expressions of support that we are now sending north.  And in addition to that, we are sending a 3 minute video clip that features everyone who was at the Meet the Teacher Night!  As you can tell from the growing spontaneous applause in the video, our support was definitely heartfelt.  It was a great way to start the year!  Students learned how to be charitable and empathetic and how they can have a positive impact on others.  Kids helping kids...What a wonderful life lesson!  Thank you to everyone who helped out with this event.
