About Beaconsfield

Lord Beaconsfield Elementary is situated in Renfrew Heights, a quiet, single family residential area near the intersection of Nanaimo and 20th Avenue.  This school was built and opened in 1915 and has a long history of serving children and families in our diverse and ever changing city. In spite of the changes in our neighborhood and school, there is a sense of continuity at Beaconsfield such that same of our current families are into their third generation of sending children to the school.

Beaconsfield Elementary presently enrolls 185 students from diverse backgrounds.  There are sixteen language groups represented at the school.  Nearly a third of the children speak either Cantonese or Mandarin while English comprises the next largest language group.

The school has a strong connection to its community. The Community Schools Team and Cedar Cottage play a large role in after-school and lunchtime programs.  Cedar Cottage provides daily after-school care until 6:00pm.  The Beaconsfield community also has connections with Renfrew Public Library, UBC and Trout Lake Community Centre.

Beaconsfield offers an active extracurricular sports program (cross country, soccer, volleyball, basketball, badminton, track and field, and flag football) as well as a band program.  Intermediate students have many opportunities to participate in leadership roles in various school monitoring opportunities such as Outdoor Equipement, Library and Computer.  Beaconsfield students demonstrate a strong sense of community responsibility and take an active role in support organizations such as the Greater Vancouver Food Bank.

Parents in the community have a wide range of educational background and income levels.  They value school programs, activities, projects and policies.  The school has a small but committed Parent Advisory Council which, through its activities, provides highly effective support for school programs.

six years ago, Lord Beaconsfield was the recipient of the Love of Reading grant from Chapters.  This generous grant from Indigo Books and Music has had a dramatic and profound impact in supporting our school's ability to ensure all learners develop the literacy skills needed to ensure academic and school success.  In addition, the resources have directly supported our work in building partnerships within our community and in supporting and fostering family literacy initiatives.

Beaconsfield has strong literacy programs in place including a school-wide reading and writing program.  Student growth in reading and writing is continually monitored across grade levels through classroom based assessments, teacher observations, DRA, RAD, and three day writes.

Beaconsfield has a staff of committed professional educators who are dedicated to delivering all aspects of the provincial curriculum to all students. The school maintains high expectations for student conduct based on the principles of safety, respect, and responsibility.  We are proud to have a reputation for students who are responsible, respectful and reasonable.

The Beaconsfield staff of 17 professional and 8 support workers is committed to the needs of students and is creative and passionate in designing and developing programs to support and service all Beaconsfield students.
